Three Hills, AB – The Eagles futsal teams took to the icy roads this past weekend, and headed to Three Hills, AB for the annual Three Hills Invitational Futsal Tournament, hosted by Prairie College. Both teams played hard, but came just short of the top prize, earning second place.
Placed in a pool with Lethbridge College, and Portage College. Based on the format of the tournament, each team needed to finish first in their respective pools in order to play in the finals. The women's eagles drew 1-1 with the Lethbridge Kodiaks, and the Portage Voyageurs 7-0, sealing their finals match vs the Olds College Broncos.
As for the men's they won a tight match vs Lethbridge 1-0, and won a comeback attempt vs Portage 2-1. Going undefeated in pool play, brought the men to the finals, set to play the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
In the finals, the women struggled to connect with one another and dropped the match 5-2, scoring late in the match. The Broncos on the other hand, seemed well established as a team, and played as such. On the men's side, the Medicine Hat Rattlers came out and established possession right away, and found a way to break the Eagles defensive system. In the end, the Eagles dropped the match 4-1 vs an experienced lineup in the Rattlers.
"Overall, I thought the weekend went to plan." says eagles men's coach Todd Van Driel. "We came in knowing that this tournament was going to be a great opportunity to learn for our guys, and give many of them their first opportunity to play the sport. I am very pleased to see that many of these guys got some great experience against some very good players. As we move forward in the season, we can keep moving forward, and work on our offensive system, and fine tune our defensive work."
The Eagles teams look to move forward, as the Men's team hosts the MacEwan University Griffins in another exhibition match on January 25th, 2020, while the ladies work to solidify another exhibition match.
