MSOC Coach Todd Van Driel Post-Game vs. Concordia

MSOC Coach Todd Van Driel Post-Game vs. Concordia

Q: How do you feel about this past weekend's game against Concordia?
A: I feel really positive. We knew going into the game it was going to be a tough match, given their team from last year doing quite well in provincials, and every home opener for them has that extra little crowd presence. Going into the game, I think we were ready and knew exactly what we wanted to do. I gave the guys three things to work on, and they performed them perfectly.

Q: What were those three things?
A: Oh, those three things are my little secret, but I can tell you one. I wanted them to keep the ball, maintain possession, let the ball do the work, mainly because we were running with a very small roster of 15, as opposed to 18, so it required the guys to play the full 90 minutes, and the best way to do that is to let the ball do the work. Pick and choose the spots and spurts of energy, but for the most part, the ball needs to be moving. The guys on the field did it exactly the way I wanted them to, and that allowed us to control the majority of the game. The backline shut down any offensive threat for the most part, looked to play a safe ball, and we kept possession. I'm really excited to see the growth each game, and the upcoming game against NAIT is going to be another really competitive game. I think we are going to be getting those extra players back, making a full roster, so we can choose a bit more often when we make our runs and we can change our game plan a little bit.

Q: Player(s) of the game?
A: Our goalkeeper, Tosh Hartley, a first year, was given player of the game. He played a phenomenal game, making some pretty big saves, two specifically that kept us in it. There was one set piece, one break away, that if he weren't there, who knows, it could have been a different score line. Our veteran fifth year, Jorge De Paz also played a phenomenal game. He's not one that will typically run end to end, but some stretches of the game he had to do that and even in the 70 to 90 minute, he was still creative and kept the ball. Outside of the whole team, because I do want to give the whole team credit, those two played a spotlight worthy game for sure.
