Q: Congrats on the two wins this weekend! How does it feel to have your first wins as head coach?
A: Thanks! Wins definitely feel fantastic. We started a bit slowly with some tough teams to play, and becoming motivated after only playing two games in two weeks can be tough, as other teams begin to rise on the standings. It's never fun to see your own team at the bottom regardless of games played. And now that we can recover playing games and jump up into contention for conference championships is great. The guys have done so well in playing for each other and working on the game plan for each game. They have so many strengths as a team, so creating game plans for them are much easier than if they were a one trick pony. Winning feels good, but there are still so many things that we can work on, while learning to appreciate the process and development as a team. We have some big matches coming up again this weekend, so although it's easy to sit and look back on the weekend, we need to begin refocusing on the upcoming weekends game plans.
Q: How do you celebrate after two big wins like that?
A: Getting some sleep! The job is never over, so celebrating is done by icing our joints and muscles, eating the proper foods, and gearing up for the next weekend. I've also given the guys some freedom to celebrate by catching up on their studies haha. This season is so far from being over, and the sooner we buckle down and take ownership of our efforts, the sooner this season can stay a success. Long story short, we can't yet begin to celebrate, it's a long season.
Q: Player(s) of the game?
A: Short story: Our whole team. Long and more elaborate story--Aaron Steenhof (Striker) and Jorge de Paz (Holding Midfield)--provided energy and pace in our weekend's games. Aaron was a pest for opposing teams, and Jorge provided ball control and movement for our wingers and supporting players. These guys had outstanding matches this weekend, and it is unfortunate we can only give one Player of the Weekend, because so many of our guys player games that are deserving of this award.
Q: Since you won, did your team execute your game plan? Those three things you always have for them to do.
A: For the most part, yes, but there were definitely aspects of the game plan we could have worked on. I never give my team a goal that cannot be performed, so it is up to them to work towards those goals, and stay engaged the whole 90+ minutes of the match. The goals are simply in explanation, but complex in activation, but when we perform those goals, good things happen, and we achieved glimpses of success this weekend when performing those game plans.
